Laura Marshall is the Marketing Director for ChiZine Publications and Co-Chair for the 2012 Toronto SpecFic Colloquium. After completing an undergraduate degree majoring in History and English, she pursued a Master’s degree in Material Culture and Book History at the University of Edinburgh. In addition to this, she has completed a certificate in Publicity and Public Relations and a post-graduate certificate in Marketing Management at the Humber Business School.
In the summer of 2010, Laura completed a three month marketing internship with Harlequin Enterprises. Working in the Harlequin Series marketing department she researched social media and online promotion opportunities for the Harlequin Series romance line and sampling initiatives. Additionally, she prepared presentations for booksellers with suggestions for maximizing their online sales of Harlequin Series romance.
From May to October 2011, she managed media outreach and communications for The Mitsubishi City Chase events across Canada securing media coverage from CTV and Global TV. In addition to this, she was involved with the creation and implementation of social media initiatives, marketing initiatives, and participant communications.
During her position as Marketing Director at ChiZine Publications Laura played a key role in developing and implementing marketing initiatives for over twenty new and back-list titles. Her duties included maintaining a strong social media presence, creating email marketing initiatives, and selling books at international industry conventions. Over the last two years she has helped grow the company from a print-on-demand press to a World Fantasy Award-nominated press with considerable industry recognition distributed internationally by Diamond Books and nationally by HarperCollinsCanada.
Though not a writer herself, Laura has spent much of her life supporting literary types through her work for organizations such as the Chiaroscuro Reading Series, Toronto SpecFic Colloquium, Word on the Street, and the Edinburgh International Film Festival. Laura has been enthusiastically marketing books for ChiZine Publications since 2010.
